MORE than 50 men turned out for Bridport & West Dorset Golf Club’s September Medal, writes Peter Crowter.

There were some very good scores, particularly in Division Two where the top three all turned in net scores of 67, first and third being identical, both carding 80-13=67.

However, after sorting out places on countback, Marc Harwood came out on top with Bryn Dare runner-up.

Kevin Jones also produced a fine score to win Division One with a nett 68 with Graham Hunt in second place with a nett 70.

The winner of Division Three was Russell Weller, also with a nett 70.

RESULTS

Division One: 1 Kevin Jones (77-9=68), 2 (acb) Graham Hunt (77-7=70), 3 (acb) Barry O’Mahony (80-10=70).

Division Two: 1 (acb) Marc Harwood (80-13=67), 2 (acb) Bryn Dare (83-16=67), 3 Martin Drennan (80-13=67).

Division Three: 1 Russell Weller (96-26=70), 2 (acb) Robert Harris (92-21=71), 3 Charles Summers (98-27=71).

Dare and Drennan received a one-shot handicap cut.

Meanwhile, the Junior Medal on Saturday was won by Tom Hunt (83-9=74).

Veterans’ Section THE Bridport Seniors four-ball better-ball open was held last Wednesday.

Eighty-eight players in two-man teams took part representing 36 clubs with one player from Australia.

He visits the UK every two years and has played the Bridport course before.

Just 17 participants were Bridport club members.

Nearest the pin on sixth: Bob Wright (Cotswold Edge).

Nearest the pin on 18th: Mike Sandy (Sherborne).

The Thursday competition was also a four-ball better-ball Stableford off full handicap and 23 two-man teams took part.

The weather was mainly dull and the cool northerly wind increased during the morning.

However, this had no detrimental effect on the scoring on the course.

Thirteen teams produced scores in the forties and the winning team very nearly made the 50.

Richard Fox (19) and Bryan Holmes (20) took top spot with 49 points, two clear of Malcolm Peach (23) and Peter Crowter (28), who carded 47 points.

In third place were Mike Brake (19) and Derek Griggs (25) with 45 points.

Ladies’ Section

THE wind was blowing on Tuesday, no change there then but at least the sun was shining when the ladies played the Betty Rink Flag competition, writes Di Neal.

After using up their shots some took a quick way back to the clubhouse but the winner Di Harris had a superb round and finished on the 18th green.

Runner-up was Liz Thompson who managed to play till the 17th green.

The semi-final of the County Inter-club was held between Bridport and Parkstone at Yeovil Golf Club.

After putting up a great fight by the seven Bridport ladies, they lost 4 and 3.
