BRIDPORT Gig Club raced against crews from all over the South West at their annual regatta last weekend.

Teams from Brixham, Bristol, Lyme Regis, Barnstaple, Langstone, Swanage, Portland, Sidmouth, Torridge, Weymouth and Exmouth were in town for the yearly event.

Conditions were far from ideal but this was a blessing considering the regatta had to be cancelled 12 months ago due to unfavourable seas.

Bridport’s junior crew maintained their extremely high standards by winning their race, while there were also victories for the men’s A and C crews.

The ladies’ A team came third, the B crew finished sixth, and the C team were fourth.

That was where the men’s B crew also finished, the veterans came home sixth, and the ladies’ vets were third behind Weymouth and Swanage.

Bridport’s men’s super vets, who were making their debut, crossed the line in a credible fifth – the mixed crew took fifth too.

After a day of racing, Bridport secured joint third place overall with Brixham. Weymouth were first and Lyme second.

Along with the racing, £244 was raised for the club – the juniors sold cakes to raise money for a new racing kit.

The club would like to thank all the volunteers who helped with the organising, breakfasts, stalls, launching, umpiring, refreshments and the general running of a very successful regatta.

Bridport Gig Club rows out of West Bay five days a week and can often be seen training from the beach or pier.

They will be competing in a mixed and vets event at Caradon this weekend.
