NATHAN McMaster won the last West Bay SAC junior section match of the year last weekend, before Ewan Chambers was crowned Jurassic League champion at the club’s Christmas prize-giving.

Eleven members turned out to contest the final junior competition of 2014 on the East Pier at West Bay, with flounder, whiting, pout, bass, pollack, poor cod and rockling coming to the scales.

Jamie Salvador Swords took an early lead with a small bass, but McMaster soon had the first sizeable fish of the day courtesy of a whiting.

This was overtaken by Kadie Lynham (flounder) before James Lawrence landed a pout and whiting.

All but one competitor caught a fish with the majority of anglers managing to weigh in specimens over the minimum size – these take precedence over under-sized fish and all were returned after weighing.

McMaster then pulled out all the stops with a succession of sizeable fish, leaving Lawrence and Lynham fighting for second, while Caolan Ayers got closer to the top three.

Lynham eventually took second after a last-minute double-shot of pout.

In addition to the usual match prizes, the top three won Christmas hampers provided by Hilary Smith.

The Jurassic League takes place over the last two months of the year, and in 2014 there were five competitions.

League results are then based on the aggregate weight of all these matches.

After the competition, all the juniors, family and friends retired to the Salthouse to enjoy a buffet generously provided by the Punch and Judy Bakery.

This year there was a Christmas jumper theme and club president Dave Cornick picked the best parent and top three juniors.

Junior secretary Roger Guppy thanked all those who had donated prizes and the people that had helped out on the day.

Prizes were awarded for the winners of the final match and the league overall.

Tom Treloar of Abbotsbury Fishing Tackle donated the prizes, including a new trophy for the league runner-up.

Chambers took the title with 2,442g but only 34g separated the next three positions with Ayers (1,570g) finishing second.
