BRIDPORT boss Trevor Senior has moved to secure the services of keeper Ashley Weeks on a dual registration with Portland United.

Replacing stopper Sam Filkins, who is off to work in America over the coming months, Weeks, who filled in for the Bees a few times last season, is set to take his place between the sticks for Bridport’s trip to Brislington on Saturday (3pm).

Speaking about his new gloveman, Senior said: “I spoke at length with Ashley and he has agreed to come over.

“He doesn’t want to let Portland down but he wants to step up and test himself at a higher level.

“We know what he can do, he is a good talker, good kicker and commands his box well.

“It’s a step up for him and we are happy to have him on board.”

Senior also paid compliment to Blues’ boss Gary Bailey for his co-operation in the deal.

He added: “Gary has been very helpful over the last year or two and we agreed for Ashley to sign on cover forms when Sam wasn’t available last season.

“Gary is much like me in that if an opportunity is there for one of his players he doesn’t stop them.”

Weeks is set to go into a Bridport squad that sealed their first win of the season with a 2-0 victory over Odd Down (Bath) at St Mary’s Field on Tuesday.

First-half goals from Tom Richardson and Matt Morley proved enough for the Bees to secure the victory, as Senior found a system that proved effective.

He said: “I sat Ryan Dovell and Chris Senior in as two holding midfield players in front of the back four with legs going forward. All in all we defended well and showed a bit of character.

“Tuesday’s result will give us a big boost and hopefully we can get something at Brislington.

“It’s a tough ask because they are still unbeaten and they are always a strong side, but we go over there with a little bit of confidence and a little bit of pressure off us now.”

The Bees will be without Alan Hill this weekend as he pulled up on Tuesday with a hamstring problem, but Sean Stewart should be back available.
