SEVEN junior West Bay SAC members signed on to fish this year’s Frank & Peggy Daw Memorial Match from East Pier.

There was not quite the record turn-out of the previous year, but every competitor managed to land several fish.

Conditions were a little challenging with heavy downpours throughout the match but, towards the end, everyone managed to dry out in some welcome sunshine.

With a gentle off-shore breeze, sea conditions were flat calm and several different species showed with pout, weever, flounder, ballan and corkwing wrasse, red mullet and sea scorpion brought to the scales.

The harbour holds a large number of weever fish at this time, which are venomous and need handling with great care – a total of 16 weevers were caught during the match.

The competition was neck and neck between Connor Hallett and Nathan McMaster, both weighing in a good number of fish, including two legal-sized fish each but it was the latter who took the trophy with Hallett a close second and Eden Lynham securing third place.
