LYME Regis Sailing Club held its traditional regatta, part of the town’s carnival week.

A fleet of 58 entries included visitors from as far afield as Bough Beach and Staunton Harold.

Winners of the championship of the day were Glen Truswell and Sam Pascoe in an International 14 from Castle Cove SC, with locals John Turner and Richard Parslow, in their Merlin from LRSC, being runners-up.

There were handicap and class races, a series of five and a general handicap championship of the day.

Conditions were excellent, with building winds and seas delighting competitors and dinghies ranging from Alba-cores, Phantoms, Lasers and Merlins to RS 700s and DOnes.

Particular note should be made of the young members, who sailed well in the challenging conditions – Findlay Fuller in an RS 700, Josh Coates (RS 600), Cameron Moss, helming dad Darrol to win the Youth Cup, and first crew in the final race, Max Whittome.

Visitor Daniel Martin from QMSC, a member of the Youth Olympic Squad in a Laser Radial also won the medium handicap class and finished seventh out of 58 in the championship of the day.

Daniel’s grandfather lives in Ware Lane and he learnt to sail in Lyme with the LRSS.

Race officer Tim Parsons was supported by an experienced team on the water and ashore, which also included some youth members getting a taste of race management.

Cruisers raced on both days, with Dan Jaffe in ‘Goodwill’ again providing the committee boat.

The popular regatta barbecue at the club rounded off the first day’s racing after more than five hours had been spent at sea.

Commodore David Beer welcomed the competitors and thanked all supporting the regatta, including the harbour staff who accommodated visitors on the slipway.

Tim Parsons announced the winners and the mayor, councillor Sally Holman, presented the prizes.

Coast Water Sports of Ax-minster sponsored the event, and the commodore presented a donation to Dave Edwards of the regatta and carnival committee.
