A SUNNY morning encouraged a turnout of 78 entrants for the men’s Sunday competition, the RNLI Medal, writes Peter Crowter.

Not surprisingly, the favourable conditions produced some low scores and, in Division Three, the top three all carded nett scores in the 60s.

Tony Burt’s excellent nett 65 was the lowest of the day, earning him a two-shot handicap reduction.

Close behind with a nett 66 was Tony Edwardes, who also received a two-shot cut. Ian Thacker topped Division Two with a nett 69.

The lowest gross score of the day was carded by Division One winner John White, with a nett 70, and he headed that division from Martin Horton on countback.

No-one dominated the field and there was little to choose between the leading scores.

1 Dave Howat (16) 36pts, 2 Mike Halford (25) 35, 3 Geoff Hunt (27) 35 The veterans’ Thursday competition was the second round of the Holmes Cup.

Fifty-three players enjoyed the conditions and the only factor that might have cost the early starters a stroke or two was the very heavy dew.

Two players achieved a nett score in the 60s, the lowest being Ed Hanson.

His score of 67 led Division Two by a hefty eight shots from runner-up Tony Williams who, along with five other players in his division, carded a 75. Richard Lomax was the leader in Division One with a nett 69, edging Dave Boggis into second place by one stroke.

In an inter-club veterans’ match, Bridport enjoyed a convincing 5-1 victory over Taunton & Pickeridge, gaining revenge for defeat to the same side in their previous meet- ing.

The juniors’ April medal resulted in an easy win for Ben Carruthers.

His score of 93-22-71 gave him a 10-shot victory over runner-up Tom Hunt (103-22-81) and earned him a one-shot handicap cut.

Meanwhile, teams led by the ladies’ captain, secretary and the handicap secretary played a 3-2-1-Bowmaker for the Barracuda Trophy.

Thirty-six ladies took part in this Stableford competition followed by a cream tea, writes Rosemary Shepherd.

The captain’s team were the winners (239pts), closely followed by the secretary’s (237) who were ruing some putts that just missed the cup.

The handicap secretary’s team finished with 233 points.
