BRIDPORT Gig Rowing Club achieved some fantastic results at Bristol’s first-ever Gig Rowing Regatta in the city’s historic old harbour.

Due to limited space in the harbour, two crews battled it out in each sprint, with Bridport competing against Bristol, Clevedon, Barnstaple and Weymouth.

The men’s veterans completed their first heat in 7.12 minutes, a time that saw them through to a final against Barnstaple which they won.

In the other divisions, Bridport men’s A finished in fifth place overall and the ladies’ A rowers worked hard to achieve a third place finish.

The ladies’ veterans finished their first heat in just 7.59 minutes. That saw them claim the runners-up position in the final.

Bridport men’s captain Mark Vanstone said: “Well done to the squad at the Bristol sprints who were a credit to the club.

“We may have been small in numbers but we certainly made an impact.”

The crews are now training hard for the World Pilot Gig Championships, which take place on the Isles of Scilly from May 2-4.

Racing gig Dagger has recently been shipped to the island and second gig Blaez is due to follow shortly.
