MORE than 40 junior golfers, their parents and friends gathered at Bridport & West Dorset Golf Club for the section’s AGM and prize-giving.

PGA professional and junior organiser David Parsons hosted the event which saw Kieran Mulhall take the lion’s share of the glory.

Mulhall was elected junior captain for the 2014 season and won seven trophies during 2013, including the Boys’ Player of the Year award and the Tom Wanless Match Play Knockout Cup.

Tom Wanless, now aged 87, was there to present the trophy and told the assembled players how he had started golf in 1938.

He also said he hoped that they would get as much enjoyment from the game as he had.

Mary Corfield was also in attendance to present a new junior trophy named after her late husband Mike, who had been a long-standing member at Bridport and a supporter of junior golf for many years.

Ben Carruthers had the honour of being the first winner of this prize.

Tom Hunt, another of the bright prospects in the section, was also a winner, taking home the Pickering Cup. All other trophies were presented by ladies’ captain Liz Walker.

There were also coaching certificates to be handed out with Hector Bailey, Luke Johnson, Cameron and Jacob Cumpstone, Freddie Pearce, Jay Collins, Wyatt Sibley, William Caplen, Mannie Wellman and two new girls, Ella Cousins and Sian Summers, present to receive their awards.

Junior coaching will start again on March 1 and further information can be obtained by telephoning David Parsons on 01308 421491.

The presentation event concluded with John White doing a short Rules of Golf demonstration which proved very interesting and educational.

JUNIOR SECTION

THE juniors held their January Medal on Saturday when the weather was breezy but dry.

Kieran Mulhall (80-8-72) was the winner and runner-up was Tom Hunt (98-25-73).

MIXED STABLEFORD

THE weather was kind to the 15 men and one woman who turned out for the mixed midweek Stableford.

There was little to choose between the top three with Mike Thompson (13) taking first place on 38 points, one ahead of Jimmy Gbadebo (12), who was runner-up after edging out Andrew Hartley (16) on count-back.

VETERANS' SECTION

AFTER their washout last week, the veterans’ fortunes changed for their next Thursday competition when the weather remained dry.

There was a chilly, stiff breeze for the 4BBB Stableford and 24 two-man teams took to the course.

Once again, things were tight at the top but the team of Tim Bassett (18) and Brian Osborne (21) were the clear winners with 44 points.

The next two pairs scored 43 but Colin Hore (15) and Dave Cotgrove (26) were runners-up on count-back from Richard Parry (18) and Dave Smith (21).

LADIES' SECTION

THE ladies had a choice of competitions this week, writes Rosemary Shepherd.

The first option was to play an 18-hole ‘Medford’, playing for Stableford points on the front nine and medal play on the back nine.

Eight ladies opted for this but all found it tough. Marion Hurley proved to be the player in form and best able to cope with the conditions with a Medford score of 25. Marilyn Wilson took second place with 29.

Meanwhile, 11 ladies chose to play a nine-hole ‘Mulligan’ Stableford where they were allowed to replay one drive during the round.

The winner of this competition was Janie Dowling with 18 points, second was Carol Ponchaud (14) and third was Linda Knapp (11).

Janie is especially deserving of our congratulations since she has only just returned to competitive golf after a lengthy back injury.
