THE 2014 club captain of Bridport & West Dorset Golf Club, Phil Dowell, is pictured about to drive-in with his own 1978 wooden-headed driver (a MacGregor 693T persimmon).
The tradition of the ‘drive-in’ comes from the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, where the winner of a certain tournament was made club captain.
In order to make sure that they got the man they wanted, the members limited participation in the event to one person, who, having no opponents, only has to put a ball into play to win.
