BRIDPORT SECONDS 50 WEYMOUTH THIRDS 10

BRIDPORT Seconds were convincing winners against Dorset & Wilts Four rivals Weymouth Thirds in a game which saw home winger Aiden Vickery cross for a hat-trick of tries, writes Amy Van Zyl.

Both teams started the game without a full complement of players but it looked being quite a well-matched encounter with nothing much to choose between them to start with.

A lineout in the Weymouth 22 gave Bridport their first real shot at getting points on the board, and Vickery duly obliged to break through for a try. The conversion from Rob Parker put Bridport 7-0 up after 20 minutes.

Tony Dommett narrowly missed out on a try after spotting a gap in Weymouth’s defence, but quick handling saw Vickery surge forward to score an identical try to his first.

After initial success, Bridport’s play began to lose momentum. Poor discipline saw Weymouth get through the Bridport defence right on the hosts’ line for a try that made it 12-5.

Bridport quickly regained composure and territory and outstanding interplay from forwards Dommett and Will Challis set up a brilliant try for Chris Lamb, his first for the Blues.

The Blues followed up their success of the first half with a string of tries in the second, again set up by the forwards, and successful conversions from Mark Gough resulted in 31-5 lead.

Weymouth responded with a try although this was too late as the Blues dominated territory throughout and went on to win 50-10.

It was a great team effort from the Blues and one that showed the benefit of having experienced players in the squad.
