Men’s Section

THERE was a good turnout for a weekday competition when 20 players took the field for the November Midweek Medal at Bridport & West Dorset Golf Club.

The day’s winner was chairman of the greens, David Woodroffe (74-5-69), who edged Michael Franklin (79-10-69) into second place on countback. Mike Patrick took third place (87-17-70), while Franklin received a one-shot handicap cut.

The men’s Sunday competition was a three-man Stableford – two best scores to count, ¾ handicap allowance. Twenty-seven teams set out and the fine conditions produced some good scores.

In third place, with 79 points, were Gary Edwardes (8), Steve Crabb (8) and Doug Miners (15). One point in front were Karl McGrady (14), Mike McGrady (15) and Andrew Reichter (21) with 80 points. However, way out in front with a nine-point margin was the team of Pat Woolmington (3), Ed Cary (5) and Ben Ashton with a huge score of 89 points. Veterans’ Section A TOTAL of 58 veterans started in the first round of the Winter Shield.

The fairways were soft due to the recent wet weather and that, and the hollow tining, reduced the run on the ball. However, in compensation the conditions helped to hold the ball on the greens and good scores were recorded. After his win last week, Marcus Beresford had to settle for the runner-up spot this week with 39 points.

Three points clear of him and the only man to get in the 40s on the day was overall winner Ian Perry with an excellent 42 points. Leading Division Two was Keith Delves with 38 points.

RESULTS

Division One: 1 Ian Perry (20) 42 points, 2 Marcus Beresford (17) 39, 3 Brian Savery (18) 38, 4 Stuart Prince (17) 37.

Division Two: 1 Keith Delves (25) 38, 2 Mike Conway (27) 37, 3 (acb) Derek Griggs (21) 35, 4 (acb) Tony Udall (23) 35.

* Perry and Beresford both received a one-shot handicap cut.

Ladies’ Section THE Ladies had a lucky escape on Saturday – at 7am it was snowing but by 9am it was sunny, that capricious old thing, had come out and the snow did not lie, enabling them to play their medal competition, writes Lyn Hargrave.

On Tuesday, 33 ladies took part in the monthly medal.

For the most part, the scores did not quite live up to the sublime weather.

However, Marion Hurley took full advantage of the conditions by carding a nett 71 to merit a one-shot cut to her handicap down to 17.
