Rob and Gavin at the top at Bridport

THE men’s Sunday competition was a Stableford at Bridport & West Dorset Golf Club, played off a full handicap, writes Peter Crow-ter.

There was a good turnout of 80 starters on a morning that was dry but overcast with a breeze. No one quite made 40 points but Gavin Gay, first in Division One after countback (nudging Mike Franklin into the runner-up spot) and Rob Laverton, leader of Divis-ion Three, all scored 39 points. Top man in Division Two after countback was Simon Beal with 36 points.

The club’s Hardy A team played the second (home) leg of the Hardy A Cup Final against Sherborne and won 6-2. Unfortunately, having lost the away leg 7-1, they went down 9-7 on aggregate. n The veterans’ Thurs-day competition was a three clubs and a putter Stableford. The morning was a dry one but there was a very strong wind blowing.

However, despite this there was a surprisingly good turnout of more than 50 starters.

Normally the scoring in this competition is not too far off a Stableford with a full set of clubs so the modest scores handed in were more to do with the howling gale than the few clubs allowed. There was only one point separating the four prize winners in Division One, but coming out on top and overall winner after countback from runner-up Nick Franks was Fran Eamer with 32 points. Trevor Foster led Divi-sion Two with 31 points.

* Jane Dowling and Ruth Donovan were the top pairing in the qualifier for the Carole Brown Winter Pairs competition, writes Lyn Hargrave.

The format was a greensome Stableford, which saw 15 pairs taking part.

The first eight of those now go on to compete in a knockout competition.

Results 1 Jane Dowling & Ruth Donovan 38pts (played on Saturday), 2 Carole Brown & Di Harris 30pts (ocb), 3 Rossanne Bonfield & Joan Brake 30pts (ocb), 4 Marilyn Wilson & Liz Thompson 30pts, 5 Angie Stone & Nicky Stone 28pts, 6 Heather Campbell & Di Stothard 27pts, 7 Lyn Hargrave & Di Edwards 25pts (ocb), 8 Margaret Thompson & Jane White 25pts.
