Lyme Regis: Warning to lock up boats and trailers in harbour

POLICE are urging boat owners to review their security after the theft of a boat trailer at the harbour in Lyme Regis .

The road trailer for a sailing dinghy had been secured by a ball-hitch lock when it was stolen.

The latest incident follows the theft of a 17ft dory, the Sahara, from the West Dorset District Council yard behind the harbourmaster’s office.

PCSO Luke White has urged boat owners to do what they can to deter thieves.

He said: “Make sure boats and trailers are fastened by a good-quality chain to something solid and secure.

“A trailer with a clamp or ball-hitch lock can easily be loaded into the back of a van or put onto another trailer.

“Make your property identifiable and write down serial numbers and model numbers which can assist in tracing stolen items. Consider putting a tracker into your boat which would allow it to be traced should it be stolen.

“We are working with West Dorset District Council, Lyme Regis Power Boat Club and Lyme Regis Sailing Club to increase the security in the area and help prevent further crimes.”

Residents are urged to call the police on number 101 with any information about the thefts.
