MEMBERS of Lyme Regis Sailing Club’s Youth Section were delighted to receive a grant of £8,000 from the Club for Young People for the purchase of two Laser 2000 sailing dinghies.

David Beer, commodore of Lyme Regis Sailing Club, took ownership of the boats on Sunday.

He thanked David Cozens, chairman of the Lyme Regis Club for Young People for their very generous gift.

The Club for Young People has recently been renamed Ambition and in recognition of the source of the funding the two boats have been named Ambition I and Ambition II.

Chris Joyner, LRSC committee member, stated that Laser 2000s have been around for a number of years and have become the main modern two-hander boat in many training centres.

“They fill an important gap in the boats available to the youth section, as whilst they are a very good teaching boat for the relatively inexperienced, they are also capable of being raced competitively, and will extend the sailing skills of the older more advanced youth sailors.

“The latter have tested the boats over the last few weeks and state that they are delighted with them as they will provide many years of sailing enjoyment, and presented on the day that Ben Ainslie won the gold medal, will stimulate our young sailors’ ambitions to emulate Ben’s success.”
