Lyme Regis: Alternative torch relay heads to resort

AN ALTERNATIVE torch relay will be in Lyme on Saturday, July 14.

Richard Doney said: “The Real Relay was started by people who were disappointed that the other torch was going to spend more time in a vehicle than it was in a runner’s hand.

“It is being run 24/7 by volunteers for 8,000 miles passing through all the places that the other torch is visiting.

“It has a GPS tracker so that you can see where the torch is at any time online.”

He added: “It will be in Lyme on Saturday, July 14, two days after the other torch.

“Everyone I’ve explained this project to has been very enthusiastic as it seems the antithesis of the other torch’s journey.

“Many of us want to lay on a welcome when it hits Lyme.

“The volunteers carrying it in Lyme are called Team Lyme Regis.

“They say on the Real Relay website: ‘Lyme Regis has got such a fabulous spirit and it’s great for us as a community to show our pride being part of the Real Relay.’ “Our team will be bringing the torch from Chideock and handing over to the next team who are going to run it to West Bay via the coastal path.”
