When it comes to celebrating a Diamond Jubilee, Lyme Regis does it better than anywhere else.
That was the verdict on a weekend packed with festivities, which turned the town red, white and blue and provided a chance to join the fun for both locals and visitors.
And despite yesterday’s rain causing some last-minute wet weather contingency plans to be hastily put into action, Lyme Regis Mayor Sally Holman said the celebrations couldn’t have been bettered.
“It was fantastic – better than anywhere else and we are so proud. It just shows what can happen,” she said.
Coun Holman was at the helm of a steering group pulling together more than 30 events over the extended bank holiday weekend, believed to be the biggest celebration anywhere on the Jurassic Coast.
From a civic parade to street parties, theatre shows and sporting events Coun Holman said the town had done itself proud.
One of the highlights was the maritime celebration Review of Fleet Salute and Sail Past with a host of vessels sailing along the Lyme shore and on Monday a spectacular torchlight procession and lighting of the beacon.
And even though yesterday’s events had to be re-arranged after the heavens opened, spirits weren’t dampened.
Organisers said the postponed wacky “Games” would definitely take place later in the summer.
Coun Holman said: “The town has been buzzing.
“Visitors were enjoying themselves as much as local people.
The events on the water were outstanding and our two Chelsea Pensioner guests of honour added a wonderful extra dimension.”
“I really want to thank the people who worked so hard to make this happen for the community and the visitors.
“It couldn’t have been better.”
