West Dorset: Horticultural show attracts 600 entries

THE sun shone on Saturday for the Uplyme & Lyme Regis Horticultural Society’s 81st Summer Show.

With more than 600 entries, despite the late growing season, the marquee had a good show of flowers, fruit, and vegetables and 10 judges awarded more than 20 trophies to the best entrants.

Cooks and winemakers had been busy too, presenting a wonderful display of wines, cakes, scones, bread, and preserves.

One of the stars of the show was 16-year-old Ashley Ball, who entered a large number of classes and came away with plenty of prizes.

This year’s show secretary Barbara Bull said: “It’s really good to see youngsters so interested in growing and showing.

Entertainment came from the Appalachian Dancers, Uplyme Morris Men and the local Black Velvet Band, plus there were demonstrations by the Rousdon Spinners and East Devon Beekeepers, including a live colony of bees.
