CUPID’S ‘green’ arrow struck lucky when it matched an aspiring gardener with a landowner.

Turn Lyme Green (TLG) successfully launched its Gardenshare scheme last week and made its first match between Nicca Kathrens and Terry Tompkins.

The pair will be meeting again this week to inspect Nicca’s garden and with any luck they will be sharing some produce within a few months.

The scheme links landowners with perhaps not enough time or skill to make use of the space, with people who would like to grow their own but do not have the land they need.

TLG hosted a match-making evening at the Marine Theatre last Tuesday, chaired by Alan Vian who introduced short videos from River Cottage introducing the concept of sharing gardens for fun and food.

Barbara Bull from the Uplyme and Lyme Regis Horticultural Society explained how the society works and invited everyone to join and to attend their talks.

She said the society’s plant sale and coffee morning on April 24, from 10am to noon, is a perfect opportunity to buy the seedlings to get your garden growing.

Justin Loveland, head of geography at the Woodroffe School, described the work the school’s Environmental Action Group has been doing this year, and offered the pupils’ services to anyone who has a garden to renovate.

Alan Brown, who also teaches geography at Woodroffe, described the allotment that the students have created this year at the school.

After doing all the hard work of digging the garden, planting the seeds and protecting it from animals, they are now in need of volunteers over the summer holidays when the bulk of their produce is ready for harvesting.

If you are willing to help tend – and harvest for your own table – the Woodroffe allotment during their summer holidays, please contact alan.brown@woodroffe. dorset.sch.uk Polly Benfield of Turn Lyme Green, introduced the Lyme Gardenshare Scheme, and guidelines, certificates of agreement, and questionnaires for garden owners and gardeners were handed out.

Questionnaires should be returned to Eco-Logical-You on Broad Street (01297 443319), where they will be kept in a special section on the bulletin board to enable those who are offering gardens to look for appropriate gardeners, and vice versa.

Blank questionnaires are also available from www.turnlymegreen.wordpress.com Anyone who joins the Southwest Allotments Association, at a cost of £2, automatically gets public liability insurance, which will protect both gardener and owner.
