YOUNG musicians played to two sell-out audiences in a performance all about ‘freedom’.
A professional musician worked with 50 students from St Michael’s Primary and Woodroffe School for two weeks ahead of the performances.
The collaboration between year 6 and 9 pupils has been led by youth music project B Sharp and its music leader and composer John K Miles.
The students composed their own music for the two sell-out concerts at the Woodroffe School and each piece drew on influences from around the world about freedom and positivity.
They named the production ‘Freedom Generation. Live!’ and the compositions included stamping feet, drum beats and rhythms, brass, and wind and stringed instruments to create an electric atmosphere.
St Michael’s Primary headteacher Chris Tozer said: “We were delighted with the outcome of the B Sharp project and every aspect of our children's involvement was a positive one. The relationship between the tutor and the children was fantastic. He gave every child an opportunity, irrespective of their ability and he used their ideas to create music.”
B Sharp project manager Fran Williams said: “The schools’ collaboration has been a great success, with each school embracing the project fully. B Sharp was set up to inspire young people through music and that is exactly what has been achieved here.”
This was B Sharp’s third music production since its launch in August 2008. It also offers free music making opportunities for young people.
Anyone who would like to attend a workshop or take part in the next production, regardless of musical experience, should contact Fran at fran.williams@lymeregis.com
