May 14, 1993:

WHOOPS: Veteran golfer Bob Roberts accidentally started up his electric trolley while playing a shot on the seaside course at Lyme Regis- and sent it over the edge of a 100-feet cliff.

Mr Roberts (74), of Church Street, Lyme Regis, said: "I was on the 14th green and I pushed the trolley to one side and must have turned on the switch without realising it.

"After I played my shot out of the bunker, my partner shouted and I turned around to see it disappearing over the cliff."

SCORE: Teenager Mark Hutchings is fast building himself a reputation as the best snooker player on the local circuit.

Mark (19) of East Street, Beaminster, had his latest success in the Wessex senior individual men's final at Bradford Abbas when he beat Radstock's Robin Gill 4-1.

BEACH: Dorset's Great Beach Clean this year bagged more than 1,000 sacks of rubbish from 20 beaches on the county's coastline.

50 YEARS AGO:

May 10, 1968:

BOOK: An Uplyme Man who wrote 85,000 words has aided England's export drive.

Already export orders are pouring in from the U.S.A.

The words the man wrote are contained in a 70s. book which will be on the bookstalls on 17th July.

The book, "Bamboos- A Gardener's Guide to Their Cultivation in Temperate Climates" has been written by Mr Alec Lawson, who is Dr N. Mutch's gardener at Pitt White, Uplyme.

NEAR-PERFECTION: Lyme Regis Amateur Operatic Society chose, for the first time in its 47 years' history, Johann Strauss's The Gypsy Baron, and they succeeded in presenting a production which is near perfection, if such heights are accessible to amateur societies.

WINNER: The Shetland Sheepdog, Tumblebays Amethyst, owned by Mrs G. Evans of Medways Farm, Askerswell, won three firsts, the Challenge Certificate and was Best of Breed at Bath Championship Show.
