ELECTORS in Lyme Regis could be going to the polls again after the resignation of a town councillor.

Cllr Daryl Turner stood down from Lyme Regis Town Council at the authority's annual meeting on Wednesday, May 24. He will continue to represent the town on West Dorset District Council and Dorset County Council, where he was re-elected as the member for the Marshwood Vale ward last month.

Cllr Turner offered his resignation to the new mayor of Lyme Regis, Cllr Michaela Ellis.

He said: “After much thought and regret, I must offer my resignation as a member of Lyme Regis Town Council.

“Following my re-election to Dorset County Council and having a cabinet position, I believe there will be numerous conflicts of interest and a very large workload, which means I cannot effectively continue on the town council.”

He added: “I believe I leave the council in a good place and will of course be available to help as Lyme's district and county councillor.”

Accepting Cllr Turner’s resignation, Cllr Ellis thanked him for his time on the town council and congratulated him on his appointment to the cabinet of the county council.

West Dorset District Council has given notice of a town councillor vacancy in Lyme Regis.

If by Thursday, June 15, a request for an election to fill the vacancy is made in writing to the returning officer by 10 Lyme Regis electors, an election will be held no later than Friday, August 18.

In April, Cllr Graham Turner was appointed to the town council after he was the only candidate to apply for the vacancy left by Anita Williams when she resigned from the authority.
