AN ADVENTURE-seeking duo laced up their walking boots and set out on an 84 mile charity hike along the Jurassic Coast.

Mum Joanne Maloney and her brother-in-law Nick Maloney started in Lyme Regis with the aim of walking a minimum twelve hours a day until they reach Studland beach.

Giving out leaflets as they walk, the pair hope to raise awareness, and indirectly funding, for two charities very close to their hearts.

The chosen charities are Bobath, a London based treatment centre supporting children and their families with cerebral palsy, and Phab, who run residential projects and social activities to boost self esteem for people of all ages.

Nick, who grew up in Dorchester and now works in London, said: “The walk works out at just over a marathon a day on average, with a little bit more on the last day.

“We’re hoping we will help these little known charities get some exposure.

“Jo’s son, George, who is three-years-old now, was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when he was seven months old.

“It was a real shock for Jo and her husband Ben.

“George had a very difficult start in life, he had meningitis as a newborn and it was touch-and-go for a little while. Bobath offer physio therapy treatment to improve mobility and speech.

“ Last year we raised £5,000 for George to have a week of intensive treatment there and they still go back for one off sessions.”

Last years’ fundraising effort saw the pair take on the Yorkshire three peaks challenge.

Jo, 35, from Southampton, said: “George can’t walk, so I always think I should challenge myself for my son.

“As a friend of mine, who also has cerebral palsy, said to me ‘every step has a purpose’, we’re doing this for our little man.”

“This isn’t about insisting people dig into their pockets, we haven’t asked for sponsorship, it’s about raising awareness of a good cause and letting people decide if they want to donate.”

To donate texts either PHAB12 or BBCP05 and the amount to 70070.
