FUNDING to help refurbish a west Dorset theatre was raised from a mystery art sale.

More than £4,500 will go towards the 'makeover the Marine' campaign after more than 100 artists donated more than 200 pieces of art in aid of the Marine Theatre in Lyme Regis.

The event, which took place at the theatre last week, included live music - as hundreds flocked to the venue to get their hands on pieces of art.

Clemmie Reynolds, director of the Marine Theatre, said: "We were absolutely delighted by the success of of the event.

"It was a lovely day with many local people and visitors coming to buy a painting and listen to a fabulous programme of live music provided by local musicians and bands.

"We were overwhelmed by the support of more than 100 artists donating more than 200 wonderful pieces of art. It seemed a perfect event for Lyme, with so many fabulous artists living here.

"All the proceeds from the sale will go towards our fund to 'makeover the Marine', an exciting project which will extend and redesign the ground floor of the theatre, including extended foyer, new toilet complex, and hugely increased accessibility.

"Thanks to everyone who came and bought a picture."

Original artwork was on offer for sale after being donated anonymously by local artists, both amateur and professional.

The theatre will hold a grand raffle to raise money for the restoration campaign on Saturday, April 23. The prizes will include a hospitality package for the Badminton Horse Trials, as well as prizes from west Dorset businesses.

The gala black tie dinner will be held at the Marine Theatre, with an Edwardian Vaudeville themed evening.

Julie Critchinson, speaking on behalf of the Marine Theatre fundraising team, said: "More than 100 paintings were sold and we have been astonished by everyone's generosity and delight in the event.

"There was a queue at the door and in the first hour there was a large crowd eager to find a beautiful painting to buy. Thank you to everyone for your amazing support."
