A MILLIONAIRE wants to bring a new tourist attraction to the Jurassic Coast by showing visitors the “wow factor” of Lyme Regis.

Clive Hemsley has unveiled his vision for the Lyme Regis Jurassic Ski Ride - similar to a cable car- which would run from the Holmbush car park at the top of Cobb Road, across the gardens and ending up on the seafront. People would enjoy the ride in enclosed viewing gondolas.

Mr Hemsley believes the cost of the project could be in the region of £2.5m.

He said the attraction would be open all year round and would boost the economy of the town, while helping to alleviate the car parking “chaos” during the summer.

He said: “The idea would increase the age range of visitors. It will increase tourism and give more access to the seafront. It will give tourists a unique view and a reason to come down to Lyme Regis.

“This concept is to make the summer season stretch 12 months of the year.

Mr Hemsley made his fortune after setting up two advertising agencies and works as a professional artist. He said he would not pursue his plans without the support of Lyme Regis Town Council and the community.

“If it doesn’t have the backing of the town council, it is a non-starter,” he added.

“It will bring jobs to the town and create income for the town.”

If the project gets up and running, Mr Hemsley said it could take years of planning - but stated that the ski lift would not fly over any buildings or homes.

Mr Hemsley and business partner Rob Drayton have had talks with a company who helped design the Brighton Wheel about the gondolas for the proposed attraction.

“I want people to see the wow factor of the view of Lyme Regis. When the town is all lit up at night, it will be spectacular. The parking problems in the town cause chaos in the summer and this would also hopefully alleviate the pressure.”

Cllr Brian Larcombe warned that the town is “pretty much at capacity” during the summer and that extending the busy season should be a priority.

Cllr Steve Miller said the project sounded “like a terrific idea” but pointed out it may require a pylon in the gardens.Mayor Cllr Owen Lovell said that the council would consider the project.”
