Councillors look set to grant access into Langmoor Gardens from the Three Cups hotel site as final proposals for the dilapidated hotel are submitted.

The request from the owners of the Three Cups site was heard at the last town council strategy and policy committee meeting.

The Three Cups in Broad Street has been closed for more than 20 years but used to be a hotel that once housed the likes of literary greats Jane Austen and JRR Tolkien.

The final Palmers Brewery scheme for the multi-million-pound hotel redevelopment was revealed in June and welcomed by long-term campaigners.

At last Wednesday’s council meeting, a report by town clerk John Wright told councillors: “Chesters Commercial is developing proposals on behalf of Palmers Brewery to re-develop the Three Cups site, and are about to submit their planning application to West Dorset District Council.

“Part of their proposals includes access into Langmoor Gardens.”

Cllr Lucy Campbell, right, urged the town council to support the access recommendation.

Cllr Mark Gage added: “We need to make sure this access is open as much as possible and as long as possible.”

Cllr Owen Lovell proposed approving the recommendation to grant access to Langmoor Gardens, in principle, but also suggested that an investigation be carried out into the boundary issues surrounding the hotel.

The access would be subject to consideration of detailed proposals, and receipt of legal and valuation advice.

The proposal was met with a unanimous vote by councillors, and will be considered by Full Council on October 8.
