LYME REGIS: Uplyme Parish Council is supporting opposition to a proposed landfill site in Lyme Regis.

A campaign group has been set up to fight proposals which has planning application.

In May, the Lyme Regis Golf Club submitted an application to deposit 40,000 cubic metres of inert landfill to re-profile and facilitate improvements to their driving range and practice area.

Officers at Dorset County Council proposed refusing the scheme, claiming the applicants had not provided enough evidence to suggest that the impact during the five-year construction period on the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty could be justified.

But when the application was considered by members of the council’s planning committee – who had already been on a site visit – they said that it was clear the long term results would not be harmful to the area and agreed to approve the application.

A campaign group called ‘Stop Lyme Landfill’ has been set up and objectors are encouraging those opposed to the plans to make their views known to the Environment Agency.

Now, Uplyme Parish Council also vowed to fight the proposals at their August council meeting and agreed to support campaigners.

A spokesperson said the parish council will be contacting the Environment Agency with its ‘many concerns’ over the site.

Local eco-group Turn Lyme Green has also backed the opposition campaign.
