DOG owners have been advised to keep their pets away from Lyme Regis’ beaches after suspected palm oil was washed up.
Lyme Regis Town Council was notified on Wednesday afternoon that the substance had possibly been swept onto the shore.
The town council’s operations manager Elliott Herbert said: “We have received several reports from local residents and visitors of suspected palm oil on the beach.
“After discussions with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and Environment Agency and until we can confirm whether palm oil has washed up on Lyme Regis beaches, we have taken the precaution of advising dog owners not to let their pets on the beach until it can be cleared away by the town council’s external works team.
“Palm oil is not harmful to people but it is harmful to dogs.
“Public notices have been placed at all the beaches in Lyme Regis advising dog owners of the potential danger.”
