YOUTH music charity B Sharp has hired professional musicians to help educate budding stars in West Dorset.

The Lyme Regis-based charity has appointed John Miles, who works with orchestras in London and across the United Kingdom, as its musical leader for the project which has recently expanded further into West Dorset and East Devon.

There will also be a number of local musicians who have been trained by B Sharp, accompanying Mr Miles to offer their expertise to the budding musicians.

These include singer-songwriter Jess Upton, Jacques Verhaeren and Grace Gillan from local band Papa Le Gal, acoustic solo artist Angelina Westdorp, vocalist Chloe Stratta and percussionist and vocalist Matt Hartnell.

John Miles said: “This is about making the most of what we’ve got.

“The vital ingredient needed to join is a commitment and passion for music.”

The project is bringing together young musicians from across the districts and providing them with the opportunity to write, perform and record their own music, for both vocalists and instrumentalists.

Regular sessions will be held during term times in Bridport and Lyme Regis and are for all levels of experience.

Fran Williams, director of B Sharp, said: “We are really lucky to have John to come back to work with us again.

“John brings an energy and experience to our area – it’s rare, cosmopolitan and edgy. He has a magical ability to get the best out of everyone.

“He is amazing and will bring a whole different dimension to West Dorset.

“I am really pleased with the work we are already doing in engaging young musicians and helping them, but John will take things to a whole different level.”

“These new projects are working closely with schools, youth services and music education hubs to make sure that as many young people get an opportunity to take part in music making.”

To get a taste of what B Sharp offers, they are offering the chance to prospective members to go along to a session and see work in progress, or attend the next small performance from B Sharp at the Women’s Institute Hall, North Street, Bridport, on February 19 at 2pm.
