Broadchurch superfans to hold anniversary 'convention weekend'
SUPERFANS of ITV smash-hit Broadchurch are paying homage to the show by holding a convention-style weekend.
West Dorset will be swamped with ‘Broadies’ over the weekend of March 1 and 2 to mark the first anniversary of the show hitting British TV screens.
Broadchurch experts Becca Overton and Natalie Manifold have been organising the event with the help of local organisations and businessmen, and have called it the ‘Broadchurch Superfan Experience’.
Miss Overton, 21, said: “There is not much going on down here in terms of conventions and weekends dedicated to shows, and we wanted to celebrate the show and the area by holding this sort of weekend.
“We are hoping it will take on a convention-type feel, and if the demand is there we would like to make it an annual event.”
The group of die-hards will be based in Lyme Regis and pencilled in for the weekend so far is the screening of the entire first series back-to-back, plus tours of the filming locations in West Bay and in Eype.
There will also be talks given by Natalie and Becca about the show, plus a ‘superfans’ forum for discussions and debates. Organisers are hoping it will cost around £200 and it will be for 60 people.
Miss Overton is also the creator of the official Facebook fan page for Broadchurch, which has amassed more than 83,000 ‘likes’ since the show aired in 2013, and demand is already high for a place on the tour.
She said: “We want to celebrate the show but also to try and bring more people into the area during the quieter months in the spring so it will benefit local businesses as well.”
“There has been a lot of interest already on Facebook. People from America and Canada have said they would like to come over for the weekend and people have already tried to book and we are hoping people from all over the world will come to it.
“If the demand for it keeps at this level we hope to turn it into an annual event.”
Miss Overton also met DI Alec Hardy, aka David Tennant, following his performance in Richard III in London last week.
She said: “It was absolutely amazing to meet him.
“I have waited nine years to meet him, and he was such a lovely person.”
