NOVICE sailors are encouraged to seek free guidance and advice from Lyme Regis RNLI.

The charity's Lyme Regis-based sea safety officer Richard Finch is offering his support as the sailing season approaches.

Richard and colleague Andy Truscott, a sea safety volunteer, spent Sunday with 10 boat owners at the Axe Yacht Club in Seaton offering safety advice on board.

They gave guidance on all aspects of seafaring, from the importance of wearing a lifejacket, to checking that there is enough fuel and spares on board.

“Most of the boat owners are very professional, but it is the newcomers we need to talk to before they go out to sea for the first time,” said Richard.

Nick Jolly, membership secretary of the Axe Yacht club and owner of a 28 foot yacht, said: “The RNLI's sea safety service is invaluable because none of us - particularly the newcomers - knows everything about going to sea. The safety message is very important.”

Anyone who wants to take advantage of sea safety advice on board can contact Richard Finch on 07901 734505.
