Lyme Regis marathon mum finishes first in her age group
MUM Ragnhild Richards has returned jubilant from Gran Canaria where she came first in her age group in a gruelling off-road marathon.
She set out with the aim of topping her age category in the North Face Transgrancanaria Marathon and was thrilled to reach her goal.
Ragnhild, 51, took on the challenge in support of the Woodroffe School PTA as her daughter Charlotte is a year 7 pupil.
Ragnhild joined thousands of other runners at the start, 1,700 metres above sea level at Garañòn near Pozo de las Nieves.
They set out it temperatures of around 15 degrees and ended at the capital Las Palmas in about 25 degree heat.
She said: “The whole weekend was extremely well organised, very professional and super-friendly. “All 2,500 runners were treated to food and drinks several times and the over 600 who took part in the marathon were taken to the start by coaches early on the Saturday morning.
“The weather at 1,700 metres was cold, horizontal rain and fog. However the atmosphere was great, and half an hour before start the leader – and later winner – of the Transgrancanaria 119 km passed the check point.”
Ragnhild, who lives in Woodroffe Meadow, said nearly all of the marathon was off-road and the first kilometre was made particularly challenging by the rain.
“But after about an hour’s running, the sun was shining and the temperature about 25 degrees,” she said.
“The support in the villages and along the trail was fantastic and the atmosphere amongst the runners very friendly – everybody helping each other achieving the best results.
“The scenery on the north of Gran Canaria is beautiful, with pine woods, pretty villages and lots of green.
“The challenge as a runner was to do so much steep downhill in such a short period of time, and I found it a lot harder than the road marathons I have done.
“The finish by Las Canteras Beach in Las Palmas made it all worth it with hundreds of enthusiastic spectators, music, sunshine, great food and the most friendly race organisers, locals and fellow runners I have ever met.”
Asked if she would do it again, Ragnhild said: “Absolutely!”
