POLICE rushed to the scene of an overturned coach carrying passengers – only to discover it was a false alarm.

Dorset Police received a report at 4.30pm today of a coach on its side in Sidmouth Road, Lyme Regis.

Officers were sent to the scene but were stood down when it was reported to be an overturned lorry in Rousdon, which had already been dealt with by Devon and Cornwall Police.

A Dorset Police spokesman said: “The call came from Devon and Cornwall Police to us. They had it reported to them as well.

“It is one mile within the Lyme Regis border on Sidmouth Road.

“The update from the officer was that it was in the Devon and Cornwall patch anyway, in Rousdon, and that it was a lorry from a previous road traffic collision that had police tape on it from Devon and Cornwall.

“All our units were cancelled.

“It might just be a genuine mistake.

“I think someone has driven past it and seen an overturned lorry and not seen the tape on it.”
