Lyme Regis: Grants for Olympic Torch celebrations are allocated
1:30pm Wednesday 2nd May 2012 in Local News
Lyme Regis has had a helping hand from West Dorset District Council with some extra cash to fund celebration events and activities to greet the Olympic Flame.
The district council has agreed to allocate up to £5,000 from the Leisure Development Fund to assist local celebrations on July 12 and 13. Parish and town councils were invited to apply for grants last November and have now received confirmation of the amounts being awarded.
The Lyme Regis community is planning celebrations on the seafront once the Torch Relay procession has passed, including a parade of sporting achievers from the town.
A total of £4,922 is being awarded to 11 town and parish councils in West Dorset. The maximum grant being given to a parish council is £400 and the maximum for a town council is £550.
A sporting event with an Olympic theme and an evening event with entertainment and a hog roast are being planned in Burton Bradstock.
Chideock is being decorated in the Olympic colours and a tea will be held in the village hall after the Torch Relay has passed through the village.
Abbotsbury, Chickerell and Osmington are also receiving a grant.
Leader of West Dorset District Council, Councillor Robert Gould said: “We are looking forward to welcoming the Olympic Flame to West Dorset and it is great to see so many local people planning events for their communities so that they can celebrate this unique and historic occasion together.
“We are pleased to support these events and would encourage people to get involved with the celebrations, line the streets and show their support for the Torchbearers carrying the Olympic Flame through their communities.”
