Bridport: Hunt for gang who pushed man into river

POLICE are hunting a gang after a man was attacked and pushed in the river at Bridport.

The 29-year-old victim suffered facial injuries and needed hospital treatment following the incident on Saturday.

Detectives in Weymouth are appealing for witnesses to the assault which happened at around 2am.

They say the man was walking towards Bridport town centre from the direction of the Tanners public house in West Allington when he was confronted by a group of young men.

Detective Constable Gerard Marchant, of Weymouth CID, said: “The man has told us that four young men squared up to him and that then a verbal altercation took place.

“The man then states that he was pushed into the nearby river. The victim sustained a nasty cut to his face and he was treated at Dorset County Hospital.”

One of the four men is described as being 5ft 9in tall, of an average build and with short dark hair.

No further description of the four men is available.

DC Marchant added: “I’d like to hear from anyone who witnessed any incident, and from anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the West Allington area at around 2am last Saturday, as soon as possible.

“I’d also like to speak urgently with anyone who has any other information about this incident and those involved.”

Witnesses and anyone with information should call Dorset Police on 01305 222 222 or the free and anonymous Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111.
