THE average Band D property in Lyme Regis will see a 63p increase for town council services next year ‘in view of the current economic times’.
Lyme Regis Town Council is expected to increase the precept by a modest one per cent, below the current 1.5 per cent inflation rate.
Properties in Band D will pay £64.06 for the town council’s part of the council tax, compared to £63.43 this year.
Although councillors rejected town clerk Mike Lewis’s recommendation to hold the precept at the 2009/10 level, they claim the rise is fair to taxpayers.
Budget Working Group chairman Ken Meech said: “It’s a balance. We have got to bear in mind that inflation is around one per cent but also utility charges are way above that.
“As a council we have to manage it as far as we are financially able, but in view of the fact that there is a recession on, we decided we would pitch it rather low at one per cent.”
The budget proposals for 2010/11 are expected to be officially approved at the full council meeting next week.
The precept will contribute £130,340.50 to the town council’s budget, helping to cover projects planned for next year.
