Lyme: Box scheme bid backed

Lyme Regis Town Council has backed food retailers in their bid to combat one of their major problems.

The traders are left with piles of polystyrene boxes every week once their fresh food is delivered and they say there is no easy way to get rid of them.

The boxes go with the regular rubbish collections and are broken up and put into landfill.

Led by Lyme fishmonger Simon Bennett, they asked the town council to help them bring a hi-tech machine to the town which compresses the polystyrene for easier disposal.

Mr Bennett, who owns the Old Watch House wet fish shop at The Cobb, said: “The town council agreed to it in principal as long as West Dorset District Council agrees they have a space for it in Charmouth Road car park.

“It’s nice to have Lyme Regis Town Council being really supportive on this and in their own words, it’s a ‘progressive’ idea.

“Let’s just hope the district council agrees to it as well.”

The machine would cost £15,000, so Mr Bennett said traders are now working with Lyme Regis Development Trust to find funding. He added: “We would hope to get at least half that money from grants.”

“It’s an important thing to have in the town as there are 17 different traders who have polystyrene who I’m sure would find it useful.

“If it does progress we would be the first town in the whole country to secure funding to get one.”
