The revitalisation of an historic fair continues as volunteers step forward to offer their skills.

Bridport's Charter Fair has a new look, thanks to a new, modern logo donated by freelance designer Mike Bloys.

Mr Bloys has also offered his time and skills to create a poster for the event's photography competition, due to launch next month.

Charter Fair chairman, Arthur Woodgate, said: “It’s very good of Mike to do this for us. Not only this – he’s also designed and donated the poster for our photography competition.”

The competition is being organised on behalf of the Charter Fair by another new volunteer, local photographer Mark Margetts.

Mr Woodgate said: "Not only that, Mark has also designed and is managing our first Facebook page. We are very lucky to have such people with such skills now joining us.”

Mr Margetts added: “I knew of the Charter Fair, but couldn’t find anything online. I offered to set up the Facebook page to make information more readily available to everyone. The photography competition has been organised to make it accessible to all, no matter the skill level or equipment. Hence the inclusion of the smart phone category."

The Charter Fair, a free event, celebrates the granting both of the first Market Charter by Henry III in 1253 and the reconfirmation of the right to hold a market by Elizabeth I in 1554.

Mr Woodgate said: “With Bridport’s market today rated in the top 10 markets nationally, we believe that our town, our community, would not be what it is without it. In addition, we are partnering up with the Bridport Citizen's Charter, which has seen Bridport recognised as the first Rights Respecting town in Great Britain, following York’s declaration as the first Rights Respecting city. These are things worth celebrating.”

Entries for the photography competition will be available from the Tourist Information Centre and via Facebook from Monday, June 4, with the deadline for entries being July 29. The theme is 'Bridport', with five categories - landscape, portrait, street, architecture and smart phone.

Winning entries will be displayed in the Arts Centre in the lead-up to the event on Saturday, September 29, and on the day itself.

The Charter Fair committee is appealing for sponsorship to help ensure the rebirth and survival of the historic event.

So far, Bridport Lions Club, Fowler Trading Estates and Footeprints have contributed. Bridport Camera Club members have also offered their assistance with the competition, and the committee has thanked the Ropemakers for their hospitality and the Arts Centre, Town Council and TIC for support.
