FORAGING for wild greens on the beach, building dinosaurs with a famous children's author and a skatepark jam are just three of the many events set for a brand new children's festival.

Several organisations have got together to provide a an exciting programme of entertainment for Lyme Regis Children's Week.

Co-ordinated by the Marine Theatre, the event will take place over five days from Tuesday, April 3 to Saturday, April 7.

The festival's theme for 2018 is the beach, with plenty of events based around it.

Gabby Rabbitts, director of the Marine Theatre and organiser, said: "We wanted to create awareness, respect, conservation of beaches and the sea. The heritage of local children is on their doorstep.

"There is an important presence of the RNLI and local conservation groups in Lyme Regis. This week is a celebration of the beautiful surroundings we are lucky to have."

On offer throughout the week will be a vast range of exciting activities including yoga, painting, sea shanty singing, author events, storytelling, music making, dance and pottery.

The festival is a collaborative effort with the town's cultural and community organisations all getting involved.

There will be 30 events taking place with the help of the Marine Theatre, The Hub, The Town Mill, Lyme Regis Museum, Lyme Regis skate park, the lifeboat station and Serendip bookshop.

Fellow organiser Jess Coulson said: "Building a sense of community from a young age is important.

"The festival offers a range of activities to appeal to different ages, as well as for families to do together."

David Tucker, director of Lyme Regis museum, added: "We see a key part of our work as engaging people with local culture and heritage. Any opportunity to engage with local audiences is one we need to take. We want to be more attractive to local families."

All of the events are low-cost with many free to attend.

Throughout the week, a pop-up festival café will be open from 10am until 4pm providing cakes, teas, coffees and lunches for families to enjoy.

Ms Rabbitts added: "There are some good things happening at venues and community spaces in the town, but we want to build on that to celebrate all children and families in our community.

"This event is aimed at local people, but we are also confident that people will be drawn to the town.

"It's other attractions and businesses will benefit from the extra visitors to the town."
