FUNDING was raised to refurbish a school playground as pupils, parents and staff hosted a "spectacular afternoon" of fun.

More than £1,500 was raised by the Friends of Symondsbury School at the summer fair on Saturday (1), which will be used to improve outdoor facilities and enhance the school playground.

The Symondsbury School event included bouncy castles, a barbecue, traditional games like splat the rat and lots of stalls including a mocktail making stand, tie dyed t-shirts and a plant stall selling items grown by pupils in the gardening club. The school's 'jolly jar' stall attracted queues of children and pony rides provided by Connie Found were a highlight for many.

Headteacher Emma Roberts said: "What a spectacular afternoon it was.

"There was such a lovely atmosphere topped off by sunshine and the amazing result of raising an incredible amount towards the playground. So many of our brilliant parent volunteers were involved, along with many pupils, and I cannot thank them enough for the hard work, care and attention they put into delivering such a stunning event."

Class 3 pupils performed the song Lean On Me and an Egyptian dance while students in class 4 previewed their forthcoming musical production with a medley of tunes from Oliver. Music was also provided by members of the Mutter Slater band, yet perhaps the most popular entertainment of all was the "naughty teacher" stocks where staff were subjected to wet sponges being hurled at them.

The Grand Raffle offered a cash prize of £100 donated by Nantes solicitors and a whole host of lucky winners got to take home a range of prizes including donations from local firms.

Chairman of the Friends of Symondsbury School, Cat Woolner, said: "This was one of our most successful events yet, thanks to all the volunteers who helped out and especially the many businesses who donated and supported the event. "While we are thrilled to have raised more than £1,500 above all we were delighted at what a fun and friendly event it was - the spirit of Symondsbury School really shone on Saturday."
