THERE'S a Project to help youngsters set up a new home - to go skating.

After the popular Trick Factory run by volunteer Robert Ridge closed last year after nearly two decades keen skaters and BMX bikers have nowhere to meet.

Since then there have been moves to try and combine the outdoor Bridport Town Council run skate park with the indoor Trick Factory in what is being The Project.

And this Saturday a group of youngsters will be hoping to raise funds for it by helping to pack shoppers’ bags at Morrisons.

Steering group chairman Arthur Woodgate said: “This has been organised by parents with the support of the BYPAT Bridport Young Persons Action Trust Charity, and we are very grateful to Morrisons for this opportunity.

"I’ve been associated with a great many initiatives involving young people and, occasionally, their parents, both in Dorset and previously London.

"I have never experienced such enthusiasm and determination from so many adults and young people to achieve their goal – a facility open to all and for all abilities. It’s very impressive, and we must do all we can to make this work.”

Following the successful partnership between BYPAT and Bridport Town Council in developing the West Bay play area, the two are continuing to work together on the skate park project. They have been joined by parents, grandparents, young people, and interested adults from various organisations.

While substantial funding will be sought from various sources, those involved want to start the ball rolling by raising the initial funds themselves, said Mr Woodgate.

He added that the Sir John Colfox Academy is in full support of the Project, with a number of students involved in the steering group.

He said: "There is a very strong desire to see the Trick Factory re-open following its recent closure after 17 years in operation. Last month the founder, Rob Ridge, was awarded the Charter Fair Trophy for his unselfish work with young people."
