A TRIATHLON will return to West Bay next month this time with two different distances for competitors to test their stamina.

The Jhai West Bay Triathlon will take place on Sunday, June 4. This is the second event, with more than 200 people taking part last year. The course includes a bracing English sea swim, an undulating bike course over the rolling hills of Dorset and finally a scenic run that follows the Jurassic Coast back to West Bay.

This year there will be two distances for varying levels of ability. The sprint event, appropriate for both beginners and experienced triathletes, consists of a 400m swim, a 25km bike ride and a flat 5km run.

The Olympic distance, a longer course, involves a 1,500m swim, a 48km bike ride and a 10km run, won in 2016 by professional triathlete Kit walker who again is taking part in order to defend his title.

Organiser James Stone of Beyond events said: “We are so excited to bring the JHAI West Bay triathlon back to West bay for 2017. "This year a proportion of the entry fees will be going to help support the Bridport youth club and all the wonderful work they do.

"With the almost flat sprint and let’s say a more challenging Olympic course, there really is something for everyone”

Organisers are hoping to create a buzzing atmosphere to go alongside the triathlon, both on the course and in West Bay. Trade stands and stalls will be on offer, selling food and coffee for support to enjoy. Organisers are encouraging locals to come out and cheer on the competitors.

The triathlon is this year being sponsored by Jhai Ltd.

Jhai’s chairman Matt Read, said: "I’m passionate about the development of sporting events in the local community, and it’s great to have such a fantastic one right on our doorstep in West Bay.

"We’re delighted to sponsor the West Bay Triathlon and I hope that Jhai’s support will ensure that this community-minded event continues for many years to come."
