HUNDREDS of runners enjoyed Bridport's inaugural 10k fun run in the sun on Sunday.

Organised by James Stone of Beyond Events the fully-booked run offered the choice of a 5k and 10k route.

His aim, he said, was to get both adults and children out and enjoying running and that's what he did.

The 10k 'race' winner was vet Graham Sherwin who crossed the line in 39.09. The fastest woman was Suzy May who ran the course in 50.31.

Some runners used the opportunity to raise money.

That's what the team of five estate agents, Jeremy Smith, Trudi Gumbrell, Dan Magee, Andrea Proudfoot and Kate Wiscombe did running for GO Girls! who support women affected by gynaecological cancers and Mosaic, a charity who support bereaved children.

Hilary Maxwell, chairman of GO Girls said: “We were delighted to be at the event to spur the team on – there were many runners, but the Symonds & Sampson team stood out – to us they were all winners – their support to both us and Mosaic has been incredible –a real demonstration of what businesses can do to support local causes. GO Girls! are working so hard to help support women affected by gynae cancers – ovarian cancer having some of the lowest of all survival rates – and we are determined to give women as much support as we can.”

Mark Lewis head of the agency added: “We are immensely proud of the team that entered and knowing that our runners were there to support two such worthy causes was a great motivator.”

The 10K course wound from the coach station in Bridport and back again. Jeremy Smith, residential partner of the Beaminster office and one of Sunday’s runners said: “There were some tricky hills that we had perhaps not anticipated, so I think we felt duly challenged.”

Teresa Wolff, vice chairman of GO Girls expressed her thanks to the team.

She said: “It was worth the early Sunday morning start – we are immensely grateful to the runners, there was a great atmosphere and it just goes to show how communities can get together to support worthy causes and get fit at the same time.”
