THERE’S a rare chance for people in Dorset to hear from the UK’s most senior judge who was at the centre of decisions on the Brexit legal challenge.

Dorset resident Lord Neuberger of Abbotsbury will talk about the Supreme Court – of which he is president – and its role in ‘our challenging times’.

The talk has been organised by the Bridport Area Development Trust.

All eyes were on Lord Neuberger earlier this year when he ruled that the Government had to obtain authorisation from Parliament before it could trigger Article 50 to leave the European Union. It was one of the most significant constitutional decisions for decades.

He later criticised politicians for not doing enough to defend judges amid a row over the legal challenge.

Lord Neuberger, who is due to retire later this year, has been invited to give a talk in an event to raise funds to support the restoration of Bridport Literary and Scientific Institute.

A spokesman for the Bridport Area Development Trust said: “Lord Neuberger was appointed President of The Supreme Court in 2012 after a distinguished career at the Bar and in the judiciary.

“He is most widely known perhaps for presiding over the court and delivering judgement in the recent high profile case on Article 50 which threw a spotlight on the court’s constitutional role, the separation of powers and the rule of law.

“Lord Neuberger has been involved in many of the court’s most important decisions; he is a leading promoter of the openness of the court, and of the diversity of the justices who serve on it.

“He has been a Governor of the University of the Arts London, and is currently Patron of the mental health charity MHRUK.

“He lives in Dorset and was created a life peer in 2007.”

The talk will take place at 7.30pm on Friday, April 28 at Bridport Town Hall. Wine bar will be available.

Tickets £10 (including glass of wine) are on sale at Bridport Tourist Information Centre.
