A 100-year-old’s birthday proved a surprisingly noisy affair when a town crier announced the milestone at the top of his lungs.

Lyme Regis’s town crier Alan Vian rang his bell and proclaimed Audrey Kelly’s 100th birthday celebrations.

Mrs Kelly was also joined in celebration at Bymead House Nursing Home in Charmouth by her daughter Joy McClellan’s singing group The Gang’s All Here who performed three numbers for the great grandmother – including On Mother Kelly’s Doorstep.

Mrs Kelly, nee Brooks, was born in Pollards Hill, London on November 17, 1916 and grew up in London.

She met her husband Ralph whilst on holiday on the Isle of Sheppey in the 1930s and the couple were friends for a number of years before getting married in 1940.

They lived in London where Mr Kelly worked as an architect before moving to Lyme Regis when he retired 36 years ago. Their two daughters Patricia and Joy were born in 1944 and 1947 respectively, and Mrs Kelly now have four granddaughters and five great granddaughters.

Mr and Mrs Kelly were well known in Lyme Regis as they went about town on their mobility scooters and dressing up every year for Lyme Regis Carnival.

They were able to celebrate 70 years together six months before Mr Kelly died in October 2010.

Mrs McClellan said: “When she was down here in Lyme Regis, she spent many years helping in the Joseph Weld Hospice shop and before that she used to help out with the RNLI.

“They moved down here because they always loved the West Country and used to holiday here.

“I brought the singers along because she always used to love music and dancing.

“She would dance round the house while we were growing up.

“It was fantastic. Mum really enjoyed it and I thing everybody else there did too.

“Bymead House were brilliant.”
