A COMMUNITY organisation has launched a plea for swimmers to come forward to help raise money for charity.

Bridport Lions is appealing for volunteers to take part in this year's Swimarathon. The event will take place at Bridport Leisure Centre on Sunday, October 2.

This year's Swimarathon will be sponsored once again by Amsafe Bridport. The Amsafe sponsorship, along with funding from other local sponsors, will allow organisers to cover costs.

Lucy Paull, president of Bridport Lions Club, said: "Each year we put on different fundraising events to raise money which enables us to help people in these areas that are in need of support. Without the support at these events, this would not be possible.

"The Swimarathon is our biggest fundraising event, taking in about 50 per cent of our fundraising income for the year - hence why it is so important to do.

"We have managed to help so many groups, schools and individuals do things they wouldn't be able to do without our support and also thank everyone who has helped us along the way."

The event is now in its 24th year, and swimmers have raised almost £70,000 for charity since it was first held.

Ms Paull added: "All the money raised by the swimmers will go directly to charities.

"Bridport Lions hope to beat last year’s record fundraising of £5,332 and with the help of the sponsored teams of adults and young people who all together totalled an amazing 1,409 laps. Will any of the swimmers beat last year’s fantastic effort by Bridport Barracudas – Mary’s Boys of 104 laps in 50 minutes?"

Individuals or companies who would like to sponsor the event at Bridport Leisure Centre or take part as a team of swimmers should contact Bridport Lion Peter Garlick on 01308 424536.
