AS installation art goes what could be better than a Bunny Girl, a Reliant Robin, a doomed love affair and dodgy 80s music?

Not much according to former Woodroffe School pupil Sadie Hennessy who is returning to Dorset, after many years away, to create her sound installation for the b-side Festival on Portland this September.

Artist Sadie responded to a call from festival organisers for ideas about Portland.

She said: “The only thing I could remember about Portland was if you lived in Lyme like I did if you couldn’t see Portland it was going to rain.

“And I had friends with a Reliant Robin who in high winds would sit in the car a blanket, with a Thermos and a boom box and listen to music, so car wouldn’t blow away.

“I also used a story based on my teenage diary from 1982 which recounts the tale of my brief and doomed teenage love affair with Portland punk Andi.

“At the time it felt very significant but when I read back I only went out with him for a month and we were arguing and splitting up for most of that time!”

The excerpts will be read by a local teenager and the Reliant Robin will be parked at Portland Bill, and visitors will be invited to get inside it and listen to excerpts from the diary and new wave songs from the era.

At the end of the festival, on September 18, a parade of Reliant Robins will tour the island, to the strains of early 80’s pop music.

Sadie is looking for more Reliant owners to take part and is asking readers might want to join in to get in touch.

She said: “I am absolutely thrilled to be coming back I absolute love Dorset and don’t get the chance to come back as often as I’d like. I just can’t wait it is going to be brilliant.”

The rally starts at 11.30am at the Chesil Beach Centre car park and will end with a rally, tea and cake on Portland Bill.

She said: “I want as many Reliants and three wheelers as I can round up. They are quite thin on the ground but they are real period pieces.”

Sadie left Woodroffe to take her A levels at Weymouth College where she describes her attendance record as ‘pitiful’.

Sadie has a degree in theatre and has worked as a TV producer - giving her skills very useful this kind of large scale public art, she said.

She also has an MA in fine art she took as a mature student six years ago.
