A PUB that closed its doors seven years ago could be turned into accommodation for workers.

The Angel Inn, Lyme Regis, was closed in 2009 - but plans will be submitted to West Dorset District Council to transform the building into six bedrooms.

Palmers Brewery, who own the pub, want to offer the space for staff members who work at the company's other pubs across Lyme Regis.

As well as six bedroom suites, the development would include "some living accommodation".

Nigel Jones, agent for Palmers Brewery, said that some of the existing building would be demolished and that the company finds it "difficult" to provide accommodation for staff in the seaside town.

He said: “ Palmers Brewery are pleased to announce that a planning application is to be submitted this week to West Dorset District Council for the conversion of the former Angel Inn in Lyme Regis, which has been vacant for some time, into six bedroom suites and some living accommodation .

"The proposal will involve the demolition of some of the outbuildings on the site including the skittle alley to provide for additional parking .

"When redeveloped, the rooms will be used for staff accommodation for the various other pubs owned by the Brewery in Lyme Regis to satisfy a demand that is difficult to otherwise provide .”

Three years ago, Palmers said it was going to submit a planning application to West Dorset District Council in order to turn the Angel Inn into flats after "having tried to improve the pub’s trading potential by trialling several different formats" but no application was ever completed.

Palmers also runs the Royal Standard, The Cobb Arms, The Ship Inn and the Pilot Boat Inn, all located in the town.

Last month the company announced it would also be submitting plans to refurbish The Pilot Boat Inn. Subject to approval by West Dorset District Council, the pub could be redeveloped to include a new restaurant and an open terrace.

The new restaurant would be glass-fronted and could double up as a skittle alley - while letting rooms would also be available at the pub.
