WEST Dorset MP Oliver Letwin has said he would have changed his position on the Iraq War had more information been available at the time.

Mr Letwin represented West Dorset in 2003 when the decision was taken by Tony Blair's government to support the US invasion of Iraq. He voted with the Labour government in favour of military action.

Wednesday’s publication of the much delayed inquiry by Sir John Chilcot, found that the war "went badly wrong, with consequences to this day." He made no judgment on whether military action was legal and the key findings were that the case for war was presented with "a certainty which was not justified."

It was based on "flawed" intelligence about Iraq’s supposed weapons of mass destruction which was not challenged as it should have been.

Mr Blair acknowledged that the report contained "serious criticisms" and said he took "full responsibility for any mistakes, without exception or excuse."

He added that his decision to send troops into action was taken "in good faith and in what I believed to be the best interests of the country."

Commenting on the findings, Mr Letwin said: "This report is enormous and contains a huge number of conclusions on which we will all need to reflect."

He added: "If I had known then what I know now, I would have voted differently."
