PLANS to bring a new tourist attraction to Lyme Regis have been shelved after failing to gain the approval of the town council.

Clive Hemsley wanted to construct a Jurassic-themed ski lift from the Holmbush car park, running across the gardens to the seafront. People would have enjoyed the ride in enclosed viewing gondolas.

Mr Hemsley believed the project, which he estimated would have cost him around £2.5m, would have created jobs all year round and help extend the busy summer season for local businesses.

In a report to councillors prior to last week's meeting, town clerk John Wright recommended "the council indicates to Clive Hemsley that it does not have any objections to the Jurassic ski lift project but would consider its position again."

But councillors decided to reject the plans, believing the project would not suit the town.

Mr Hemsley made his fortune after setting up two advertising agencies and works as a professional artist. He said he would not pursue his plans without the support of Lyme Regis Town Council and the community.

Mr Hemsley confirmed he will not be pursuing the project.

Speaking after the meeting, he said: "I always maintained unless I get 100 per cent backing form the town council, it's a non-starter for me.

"There is a famous quotation; 'in order to stay the same you have to change'. That just about sums it up. Clearly the majority of the council voted against change.

"It's a real shame. It would have generated a lot of income and jobs for locals 12 months of the year and all the benefits of a marvellous Jurassic cable car theme.

"I am also disappointed that the town council as yet, has not had the courtesy of telling me officially despite my emails asking for the decision.

"I won't be pursuing the project."
